A couple recently chose this piece as a reading for their wedding. I hadn’t come across it before and it wasn’t until I started doing some research that I discovered it’s actually lyrics to a song by Steven Curtis Chapman.
Now, on listening to the song, I can’t say I’m a fan. However, I love having my preconceptions challenged and I also love re-working music, poetry and prose to give them new meaning in the context of an individual ceremony.
It was the simplicity and the sentiment of the writing that first appealed to me and I think it makes a lovely reading.
And after all, it’s not about me. It has special meaning for the couple who chose it and I know it will be perfect for them on the day.
I Will Be Here,
by Steven Curtis Chapman
Tomorrow morning
If you wake up
And the sun
Does not appear
I will be here
If in the dark
We lose sight of love
Hold my hand
And have no fear
Because I will be here
I will be here
When you feel like being quiet
When you need
To speak your mind
I will listen
And I will be here
When the laughter turns to crying
Through the winning, losing and trying
We’ll be together, because I will be here
Tomorrow morning
If you wake up
And the future
Is unclear
I will be here
As sure as seasons
Are made for change
Our lifetimes
Are made for years
So I will be here
I will be here
So you can cry on my shoulder
When the mirror
Tells us we’re older
I will hold you
And I will be here
To watch you grow in beauty
And tell you all the things
You are to me, I will be here
I will be true
To the promise I have made
To you and to the one
Who gave you to me
I will be here
And just as sure as seasons
Are made for change
Our lifetimes are made for years
So I will be here
We’ll be together, I will be here
